Throughout the Second World War, the Luftwaffe demanded faster fighters with improved altitude performance and light bombers able to outpace interceptors. Germany's airframe and aero engine manufacturers used every tool at their disposal to meet those requirements - lowered cockpits, longer wings, stretched fuselages, pusher props, bigger engines, exhaust gas turbochargers, multi-stage superchargers, intercoolers supplemental turbojets and more.
