Tom Statford is having the worst luck. It all starts when a friend is left, battered and bloody, on his doorstep. From there, it's a search to not just find out who did it, but why. Things are as always not what they seem, and Tom discovers that fortune doesn't always favor the foolish. And the house always wins.
