Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The Preface - usually an ex post facto excuse for writing - shall be short. Well acquainted in days gone by with the Shores and Islands of Lough Corrib, and not insensible to the beauties of Lough Mask, I was not a little surprised, when returning to the old nest there a few years ago, to find that, notwithstanding its perfect accessibility, this interesting district was comparatively unknown to tourists, and the true character and history of its monuments were neither appreciated nor understood by its inhabitants.
