The sagas are the victors’ tales. In the shadows of history, many fates remain. In this novel, a woman emerges from the darkness of the past and writes down her life story. It is a saga different to that a man could have written, a saga different to what those in power would have told.

Liv Gudmundsdatter’s story begins in 1162, in a Norway undergoing civil war, and ends in a convent on the Rhine in 1217. It is a story about being abandoned to the will of others and living by others’ mercy. It is about coercion and subjugation, but also about the oppressed’s desire for revenge and will to power. Even though it leads to ruin.
