Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The materials for the following Life of Field-Marshal Lord Seaton are drawn (1) from his own letters and those of his wife and his friends, (2) from reports taken down by his daughters (from about 1847 onwards) of his spoken references to events in which he took part, (3) from the recollections of persons now living, (4) from published works.<br><br>For the use of letters, I am indebted in the first place to the Hon. Lady Montgomery-Moore, whose anxiety to see some such monument raised to her revered father's memory was my first encouragement towards undertaking this work; and secondly to the Lord Seaton, to Lieutenant-Colonel the Hon.
