Atherton had spent many years in Germany and still had friends there, but her initial sympathy for Germany in 1914 was erased by the German attack on the Lusitania. In 1915 Atherton voiced her anti-pacifist beliefs in the columns of the New York Times. Her article, "e;Life in the War Zone,"e; appeared in the Times in July through September 1916.
