Legends of the Mighty Sioux

Legends of the Mighty Sioux is a rare and significant collection of traditional tales, legends, and oral narratives from the Sioux (Lakota/Dakota/Nakota) nations of South Dakota. Compiled by the Workers of the South Dakota Writers' Project of the Federal Writers' Project during the New Deal era, the book brings together 45 previously unpublished (at the time) legends recorded from elders of Sioux communities. The volume offers more than simple folklore: each legend is situated within the land, language and culture of the Sioux, reflecting values, spiritual beliefs, customary lore, and the world-view of a people whose voices had often been marginalized. The compilers describe these legends as having been narrated during pow-wows, church meetings, and community gatherings on the Yankton and Rosebud reservations.
