Judging the Image

While criminology has recently seen the development of a "cultural criminology", legal studies have increasingly investigated the role of law in the production of cultural forms. Judging the Image extends arguments made within these emergent fields by interrogating the persistent separation of law from art, and by thinking through the implications of key issues in the development of the legal imagination. The book considers a series of case studies in which law and culture contest concepts of legitimacy, judgment, memory, violence and aesthetics, including: judgment, censorship and controversial artworks; art, crime and the city; HIV and the disappearing body; and art's response to crimes of violence.
