The seventeenth century often appears as a kind of "lost time," when the country seemed to be standing still. Yet in the history of the Russian state this period occupies a very special place, where both "fateful moments" and decades of gradual development are densely compressed together.
The tightest knot of this era is the Time of Troubles-a truly terrifying and gripping spectacle. A crisis of comparable scale would not occur in Russia again until three centuries later, at the beginning of the 20th century.
