Seduced by promises of a new life in East Florida by Dr. Andrew Turnbull, owner of the British colony, New Smyrna, Caty and Rafael leave their homeland, Minorca. Cruelty and virtual slavery soon corrupt their dreams. After escaping to nearby St. Augustine, they are separated by a hurricane, leaving Caty pregnant, impoverished, and at the mercy of rich, handsome Joseph Adams, and Rafael with a new identity. Their separate lives amidst the changing flags and wild grandeur of eighteenth-century Florida become rich with adventure among Indians, pirates, and fellow colonists. For each there is another love.
