Abdelrahman ElGendy grew up on Harry Potter and The Hunger Games in Cairo. On 6 October 2013, he is seventeen years old, furious at the military dictatorship, and in love with a girl, determined to attend protests his parents beg him to stay away from. On 6 October 2013, he and his father are thrown out of their car and arrested. ElGendy was due to start a degree in mechanical engineering. He will now complete it behind prison walls. Swept into a vortex where a future rests on the right phone call, arbitrary mercies and ever-changing dictates from above, ElGendy comes to understand prison is its own world. He will not be released for six years. This is a unique testimony of a radical political awakening – and the price paid for it.
