John was ten years old when the journey happened. He had heard his pa and the men of the neighborhood talking about it for a long time, but when he was ten, it finally happened. Of course, he was eleven now, and he knew a lot more, but still, his memory kept reminding him of how it had been. Even now he had a shiver go up his arms and down his back when he remembered it all. It was so much easier to look back at things that happened than to live through them while they were happening. But still . . . .

Polly snorted and jiggled her head, flipping her ears back and forth. Flies just loved to bite horses, and they were almost impossible to shoo away. The young horse twisted her head around and lashed out her tail with great impatience. Poor Polly didn't know yet that flies were not the biggest problem that could happen to her or that she would bring some of it on herself. She wouldn't know that for another two weeks.
