Doyle had killed his most famous hero in 'The Final Problem' (1893), at the end of which Sherlock Holmes plunges to his death down the Reichenbach Falls in the arms of his arch-nemesis, Professor Moriarty. Nine years later, however, his readers had become so desperate for more Sherlock that Doyle was persuaded to write a new novel about the detective. The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), set in the mysterious and misty Baskerville Hall on Dartmoor, has become perhaps the best loved of all the Sherlock Holmes adventures.
