Hong Kong established its own coinage in 1863, which was minted in London. The following year Hong Kong government formally issued the silver 1 dime as well as the copper 1 cent and 1 mill.Before that the currencies in Hong Kong were no different from those in mainland China, such as the copper coins, silver ingots, official banknotes and silver coins in early modern times, etc.Even in 1842, when Henry Pottinger, the first governor of Hong Kong, annouced that only the Spanish dollar, the Mexican silver reales, the Indian rupees and the British cash were legitimate, the attempts failed to overcome the strong local adherence to the mainland currency system.The long and slow evolution of concurrency is not only a reflection of Hong Kong's historical status, but also a study of the vicissitudes of Hong Kong society and preferences of Hong Kong citizens.
