Here is the world that awaits you if you are broke one day.. I want to explore the world more carefully. I have to know people like Mario, Buddy, and Bill the Hook, not in passing encounters, but in intimate encounters... I want to know what really goes on in the souls of the dishwashers, the vagabonds, and the sleepers on the embankment... At the present time, I feel that I have only known the edge of misery. But I am able to point out one or two things that I have learned well in my ordeal. I will never again think that all vagabonds are drunkards, nor will I expect a beggar to be grateful when I give him a penny, nor will I be surprised that the unemployed lack the energy to work, to join the Salvation Army, to pawn my clothes, I will not refuse a handbill, I will not enjoy a meal in a restaurant.
