As member of a number Of scientific societies, he was an occa s1onal contributor to the journals, but his active duties did not leave him much time to write for publication - his best work being done in his official reports to his Directors. He was prolific as an inventor, though most of his inventions were not patented. Among the most important of his inventions relating to the explosives industry were the Crusher Gauge for testing high explosives, the Quinan Packing Machine (the first successful machine for packing dynamite into cartridges), improvements in the manufacture of sulphuric acid, and numerous explosive compositions.
