In arid and semi-arid regions, groundwater is a viable alternative for meeting animal demand over long periods of time and when there is an extreme shortage of water with a low amount of salts. The majority of the region's water is identified as having high salinity due to the lack of recharge of subsurface water sources in recent years, aggravated by the great drought that the region has faced.
