Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. The introductory notes that follow, taken in part from my earlier articles, have two chief aims, the first bibliographical, i. E. An examination of the origins, dates, and content of Piranesi's work in relation to existing documents, the second an estimate of his place in the history of art and of the comparative artistic value of his different works. A short biography, and some description of his remarkable drawings complete their scope.
