Two millennia of world history are reflected in the tea cup. An early drink at the Chinese imperial court and in Buddhist monasteries, tea has conquered Europe since the 17th century. Doctors promised health and a long life from him, and at the well-tended tea table he became the epitome of the greatest pleasure in enjoyment. The Germans also got to know and appreciate him. Not only in East Friesland, but also in Hamburg, Berlin, Weimar and Baden Baden, tea still promises enjoyment and joie de vivre to this day. The book describes in living language the cultivation, trade and consumption of a unique drink. It also questions the legends that still surround tea. It provides a comprehensive overview from the earliest beginnings in Asia to the present day and illuminates in detail the development of tea consumption in Germany.
