For Six in Honor of Millions: World War I Memorials in Rural France and Australia

In a tiny hillside village in southwest France there is a humble World War I memorial. A French soldier stoically stands and stares into the distance. Every morning and evening I see him when I open and close my shutters. Thousands of miles away an Australian soldier stands at attention in a sleepy rural town in Victoria. Both villages have been my home. Looking at two nearly identical statues in far distant lands fed my curiosity about WWI. Since 1994 I've photographed over 200 rural memorials in both countries. Each monument tells a different story, reflecting early 20th-century ideas of war, religion, politics, language, and the visual arts. Antiwar sympathizers, like myself, see war memorials as statements of loss and reminders of war's horror. ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS BOOK ARE DONATED TO CHARITIES ADDRESSING THE FALLOUT OF WAR
