Mercury in fish, growth hormones in beef, mad cow disease, tainted feed given to poultry and hogs—how safe is the food that Americans eat? Students learn about mercury contamination in U.S. waterways; fish farming and safety concerns; various poultry contaminations (including listeria and salmonella); use and effects of animal growth hormones, antibiotics, and food additives; genetic engineering; irradiation; and the rising concerns about food safety (including meat processing and packing) in the United States today.
