In Fayetteville, North Carolina in the spring of 1960, high school senior Jo is on the cusp of adulthood. Confident and popular, she navigates the familiar world of Fayetteville: Friday night dances, jukebox diners, and the comforting camaraderie of her friends. But Jo's carefully constructed world is shaken when she encounters Sergeant Armstrong, a quietly handsome and deeply modest 22-year-old Air Force man. Armstrong falls quickly and deeply in love with Jo, a devotion that both flatters and unsettles her. As summer wanes and graduation looms, Jo finds herself torn between the familiar comforts of her youth and the alluring promise of a future with Armstrong.
