Exeter Excavations: the Guildhall Site

Redevelopment of this open space in the middle of Exeter gave archaeologists an opportunity to explore the earliest settlement. Did it have its origin as a major Roman fort? There is little evidence of occupation before the Roman conquest but substantial evidence from the first century AD. The author also documents finds from the Saxon and Medieval towns.
