Everyone has heard of Phinneas Gage and the terrible accident that removed nearly all of his pre-frontal cortex. What isn't known is how Gage's injury impacted the people around him and how he survived those twelve long years until his death in 1860. This true story of my father, a young soldier wounded on the battlefield and then subjected to new untested medical procedures that destroyed vital brain tissue will help illuminate just what kinds of nightmares the infamous Phinneas Gage might have encountered.
