For the convenience of the reader, and in order to provide him, as far as possible, with a consecutive story, I have relegated my preface of 1894 to the end of the present volume, where it now appears as Appendix I., and is followed by Mr. Dawkins''s account of the recent events, which is headed Appendix II.
