On a spring day in 1974, private investigator Kolbjørn "K2" Kristiansen receives a visit at his Oslo office from the widow of his former police colleague, Einar Knutsen. Ten days earlier, his colleague was found shot dead in Nordmarka, with a pistol lying beside him. The police have written the case off as a suicide, but the widow suspects murder.
