Most critics have discounted this text as simply a travel journal, but it is much more than that. Stevenson didn't travel to a foreign land in order to record his experiences. Stevenson was a Scot, who was trying to convey the intrinsic link between a particular place and a particular people. Published in 1878, this work was part of a larger movement towards establishing Scottish identity.
