Ectopic Pregnancy: Endless Challenges

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg grows outside of the uterus. Almost all ectopic pregnancies-more than 90%-occur in a fallopian tube. As the pregnancy progresses, it can cause the tube to burst (rupture). A rupture can cause major internal bleeding, leading to a life-threatening emergency. Over the years, treatment options have changed significantly, and mortality has reduced up to 2/1,000 (from 12.3% in 1920). This topic is always very important for the gynecologist community. This text, whose contributions have been promoted by Acto Piemonte Onlus and Ricerca per la Donna (RiDO), aims to provide a practical guide for future research on women's health.
