This book provides a clear account of the development and the scope of the sonnet form in Britain. Each major British writer of sonnets is mentioned, with a brief bibliographical note, a bibliography and a critical assessment with generous quotation of sonnets. A short account of the invention and development of the sonnet in Italy begins the book. The study is designed for students with no special knowledge of the subject and gives advice for further study.
