Whilst the greatest effort has been made to ensure the quality of this text, due to the historical nature of this content, in some rare cases there may be minor issues with legibility. R. Hartrick is well qualified, by his excellent work and his long experience, to write on the subject of drawing. He needs no introduction; but, as I have been associated with him in organizing the teaching of drawing in certain schools, he was good enough to ask me to write a few lines by way of preface. His book is a plea for sound teaching: it may be called, in the best sense, Academic. He states his views clearly, and buttresses his position by the authority of many eminent artists whom he has known, as well as by that of the great Masters of the past and his conclusions are not likely to be seriously Challenged.
