Diagnostic Pathology: Neuropathology

Neuropathology is a subspecialty of anatomic pathology that is concerned with the study of the diseases of nervous system tissue, with the aid of surgical biopsies and autopsies. This field is closely associated with the clinical domains of neurology and neurosurgery which refer to neuropathological results for making a diagnosis. If a neuropathy is suspected and less invasive methods cannot deliver a diagnosis, a biopsy of nervous tissue from the brain or spinal cord is taken to aid in the diagnosis. When a mass is detected by medical imaging, a biopsy is generally requested. The post-mortem diagnosis of dementia and other conditions of the central nervous system is also within the scope of this field.
