He struggles to unravel the mystery of influenza at a time when viruses were not understood.

Why was the fall wave of the 1918 influenza virus so much more virulent than any pandemic before or after it? Why did it originate in and around U.S. army training camps? Why were the symptoms so bizarre? And why did it target healthy young adults and not small children and the elderly?

The novel ends in a bizarre twist of fate.
