Edwin Bartlett died on the last night of 1885 from a massive ingestion of the poisonous solvent chloroform. Legally the case was resolved with nobody convicted. While filed away and gathering dust, it remains a mystery, and writers are drawn back to the story like mystified moths to a flame. It was scandalous at the time because of the persons involved, and there was no way that conservative judges and counsels could have fathomed what really transpired. This book highlights the victim at last and fills in the facts that were missed.
