The Crown of Valkei is the second volume of A Tale of Two Times. The Tale of Two Times is an adult Goth-Christian fantasy.  It's majestic saga originates in a pact made between Thiuderieks and the god Sunderer, but it's not your usual Faustian pact. For 8000 years the pact has engaged the Clan of Thiuderieks with the Circle of the god Sunderer in cunning cosmic warfare. The pact directs the Clan to make a deadly Soma for the god, and, at last, the deadline for the Clan to deliver falls in the mid 1960's, during the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union.
