Crossing Borders

In his memoir, Crossing Borders, John Spence, shot down in occupied France and smuggled out by the French underground during World War II, relates the sometimes funny and often heartrending adventures of his life. In addition to his riveting war story, Spence shares tales from his boyhood in the racially divided South, his work as a news reporter in Tennessee in the 1950s and 1960s, and his involvement with the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, which afforded him a close-up view of the Memphis human rights marches and the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King.
