The geography of racial identity, race, place, and mapping, the way racial identities are constructed, reconstructed, or enforced through performance, and the way literary forms, generic constructions, linguistic strategies, and critical practices construct, reconstruct, or reposition identities assigned or claimed on the basis of race are discussed in this volume. "Fritz Gysin" is professor emeritus of English and American Literature at the University of Bern (Switzerland). "Cynthia S. Hamilton" is head of the American Studies program at Manchester Metropolitan University (UK).
