Many readers can easily think of Black and Indigenous heroes and heroines from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but they draw a blank when it comes to the colonial period. It turns out that the colonial period contains a wealth of important cultural achievers: people who should be included in our lexicons, people who made major contributions to how the world evolved in that time.
