Chichuá (Xixuá)

The species Maytenus guianensis is a medium-sized tree endemic to the Amazon rainforest, known as: (chichu , xixu , chuchahuasi, chucchu huashu, chuchuasi, and chuchasha). Its roots and stem are used in traditional medicine for their supposed analgesic, muscle relaxant, healing, insecticide, immunosuppressant, anti-inflammatory, antiulcerogenic, antirheumatic, antidiarrheal, antibacterial, antifungal, anthelmintic, antiprotozoal, antitumor, aphrodisiac, and gynecological, demonstrating great ethnopharmacological potential to be explored. This book demonstrates the antigenotoxic effects of the species in tests conducted with plant and animal models.
