The legendary Gold of Tolosa, pillaged by Romans from the Celts before mysteriously disappearing into the Alps, has remained shrouded in myth for two millennia. Historians are hesitant to report its reputed weight, but some suggest hundreds of tons. Is it real or another hoax fabricated to titillate the imaginations of treasure hunters? The death-bed gaspings of a dying derelict in a Mexican jail ignites the curiosity of the dying man's cell mate, Channing Fletcher, a Vietnam vet. The old man's final mumbled words hint at a fabulous treasure he stumbled upon in the Bavarian Alps during the waning days of WW II. Although skeptical, Fletcher is drawn in by the seductive story and, after a murder and a series of violent confrontations during his inquiries, becomes convinced of its substance and embarks upon a convoluted odyssey with a glittering reward at the end.
