This volume is a prized collection of reminis¬cences and anecdotes told to the author by Confederate and Union veterans who formed the rank and file in that unhappy conflict between the North and South during the years 1861 to 1865. Much has been written about the big battles and the brave officers who led the armies, but this is the only book which expresses the true feelings and recollections of the men who formed the very backbone of the man-power upon which the outcome of every battle was dependent. These stories depict typical experiences of those thousands of humble but noble men who gave in full measure of their loyalty and devotion to the Cause in which they believed and for which they fought.
