A full account of the people of Cuttack and their circumstances was written by Mr. Stirling, published in 1822. It is still the principal authority for the early history of the district under British rule. The modern authority is Mr. Maddox's Final Report on the Survey and the Settlement of the provinces of Orissa, which has often been described as ';a veritable encyclopedia of the Province'.These are the two main sources of information for this work. The Gazetteer notes that the central district of Orissa, Cuttack, was formerly one of the royal strongholds of ancient Orissa, and still contains the remains of the Citadel in which its rulers once held their court. The most conspicuous feature in the general aspect of the district is its system of rivers, which divides Cuttack into two great valleys. The present volume gives a vivid description of Cuttack, including its physical aspects, prehistoric people, agriculture, occupations, manufactures, trade and much more.
