Bénarès Au Crépuscule Du Gange

Beaucoup d'ouvrage ont t crit sur la ville la plus vieille au monde. Beaucoup trop peu- tre, mais si je consens crire ce livre comme m'avait demand tant de fois le grand homme qu'il fut V r Bhadra Mishra, d'une plume d' alien et d'un regard d' outsider, c'est au prix de laisser s' chapper de moi cette lumi re, qui accueille chacune de mes arriv es dans la ville sainte, travers les mots dont on ne soup onne jamais suffisamment le potentiel... C'est ainsi que l'auteure - dipl m e de l'EHESS ( cole des Hautes tudes en Sciences Sociales) de Paris (France), avec un Advanced Hindi Diploma de la BHU (Banaras Hindu University) et le Sanskrit Pr mana Patriya de la SSU (Sampurnanand Sanskrit University) de Varanasi (Inde) et membre d'un cercle de Sp cialistes en Ramayana (grande pop e et un des textes fondamentaux de la mythologie hindoue) - commence son ouvrage sur la miniature indienne blottie au pied du Gange o chaque jour des milliers de p lerins et simples croyants viennent de partout pour se purifier dans les eaux sacr es d'un fleuve immens ment mais mal aim . Cet ouvrage, qui mane d'une longue exp rience de l'auteure sur le sol indien, est compos de trois parties (plus des photos prises par l'auteure elle-m me). La premi re partie donne quelques indications sur la ville sainte de B nar s; la seconde s'adresse au fleuve sacr , le Gange, et ses probl matiques; tandis que la troisi me laisse libre cours aux ghats. La description des ghats tout en gardant une note plut t intimiste d voile le caract re de chaque ghat sur lequel elle s'arr te dans le but de souligner l'importance vitale du fleuve dans le quotidien des habitants de B nar s. This is how the author-who graduated from the EHESS (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales) in Paris, with an advanced diploma in Hindi from the BHU (Banaras Hindu University) and the 'Sanskrit Pr mana Patriya' from the SSU (Sampurnanand Sanskrit University) in Varanasi (India) and who is a member of a circle of specialists in Ramayana (great epic and one of the fundamental texts of Hindu mythology)-begins her work on the Indian miniature nestled at the foot of the Ganges where every day thousands of pilgrims and simple believers come from everywhere to purify themselves in the sacred waters of an immense but unloved river. This book, which emanates from the author's long experience on Indian soil, is composed of three parts (plus the photographs taken by the author herself). The first part gives some indications on the Holy City of Banaras. The second addresses the sacred river, the Ganges, and its problem, while the third gives free rein to the ghats. The description of the ghats, while keeping a rather intimate note, reveals the character of each ghat on which it stops with the intention to emphasize the vital importance of the river in the daily life of the inhabitants of Banaras. It has the ambition of a 'lover' of the sacred city and the vocation of a plea for the river.
