Since 1962, the ""Australian Dictionary of Biography"" has been prepared by its staff in the Research School of Social Sciences at the Australian National University. It provides concise, informative and fascinating descriptions of prominent men and women. The subjects come from all walks of life - from premiers, generals and bishops, through artists, actors and authors, farmers, engineers and schoolteachers, to prostitutes, thieves and murderers - providing a cross-section of Australian society. This supplementary volume contains 504 articles, written by 399 authors. Subjects include the familiar, such as castaway Eliza Fraser and apple-grower Maria (Granny) Smith; the notorious, such as New Guardsman Francis De Groot and bushranger Dan Morgan; and the unfamiliar, including the surgeon Tharp Mountain Girdlestone. This supplementary volume fills in the missing entries in previous volumes (Volumes 1-16). The series so far goes from 1799-1980.
