This fascinating collection of over 200 old photographs of Ashton-under-Lyne and Mossley covers the period from the 1860s to the 1960s. Topics featured from this century of change include industry, schooldays, leisure, as well as events that were 'in the news'.

Many well-known landmarks which have since disappeared are recorded, inclusding Ashton Old Hall, Highfield House, Mossley Methodist Chapel, the Temperence Hall and Fairbottom Bobs. There are also street scenes and views of Stamford Park, Daisy Nook and Mossley hilltops.

Many old customs of the area are also preserved in these photogrpahs including Ashton's Black Knight, the Whit Walks, Band of Hope galas, the Wakes and Blue Cross Carnivals in Mossley. The working lives of people aren't forgotten either – here can be found the cotton and woollen mills, the National Gas Engine Works, Park Bridge Ironworks, Mossley Gas Works, the canals and the trams. Some examples of Ashton's and Mossley's famous markets are also pictured, along with many of the old shops, including 'the oldest fish and chip shop in the world'.
