Applied Linear Algebra for Engineers
Linear algebra is an increasing vital part of modern engineering, underpinning much of mathematical, technological and scientific methods that engineers are expected to deploy. When students encounter linear algebra for the first time, they are asked to step away from the familiar mechanical computations of elementary algebra and into a strange world of abstract algebra involving concepts like groups, fields, and spaces. It is no surprise then that linear algebra is most deeply understood only after years of applying it to a wide variety of technical problems.
The most common introduction for engineering undergraduates begins with a linear algebra course from the Math Department. With a solid mathematical foundation, instructors often assume students are prepared to apply those methods in upper-level engineering courses. However, the leap from classroom theory to application is larger and more complex than is often allowed for. Students need to be given the chance to learn how to make this transition.
Applied Linear Algebra for Engineers is an attempt to bridge this gap between concepts and practice by providing engineering context to fundamental topics in linear algebra in a self-learning format. Formal mathematics and historical references are suppressed in favor of examples and exercises all worked out analytically and numerically with results explained graphically where appropriate. This aim of this text is to empower senior students and practicing engineers and scientists with some previous exposure to linear algebra to dive into applications with confidence, and to deepen their understanding and innovative uses of linear algebra.
