A Jewish woman marries a Norwegian man and gives birth toa boy and places the child in an orphanage home in southernNorway under an assumed name when Germany invadesNorway in 1940. She and her husband then join the Norwegianresistance movement. Near the end of the war, her husband isshot and dies, and she is put in an institution when she has amental breakdown. The boy then comes a ward of the state and isadopted by an American couple when he is 10, along with a 1yearold girl. He lives a life of privilege in Cairo, Egypt and elsewherein the Middle East, where his adopted father is the Middle Eastrepresentative for an American bank. His life though is troubledand uncertain by the erratic, alcoholic behavior of his adoptedfather to such an extent that his adopted mother takes him andher daughter back to her family in America. When he turns 40,he becomes curious about his biological parents and goes backto Norway and is reunited with his mother.
