An update on color registration in fixed prosthetics

The aesthetic success of any prosthetic restoration depends on the right choice of shape, color and surface finish. Reproducing the optical properties of a natural tooth, to ensure biomimicry, is a real aesthetic challenge, given the subjectivity of the visual choice. The choice of shade guide must be well thought-out, respecting an effective protocol and taking into account the three dimensions of color: brightness, saturation and tooth shade. In order to standardize this step and improve its reliability, assistance tools and objective color measurement instruments have been developed. The aim of this paper is to define the physiology of color perception and review the optical properties of teeth. The second part explains the classic color measurement protocol. The last part focuses on the contribution of digital technology during this stage.
