A State of Independence

By the 1993 winner of the James Tait Black Award. Bertram Francis is a British West Indian who has spent 20 years away from the Caribbean. Now Independence is looming and he goes back to see the end of colonial rule. But his homecoming turns sour - for he is now an outsider on the island.
