Alan was evacuated from the East End of London during The War. He lived with his new mother, Miss James, in a village in the high Quantock Hills of Somerset. Miss James had a profound effect on his development. After The War, he was drafted into the Army and sent to fight in the Korean War. He was reported "killed in action". Miss James became involved with Jake who, unknown to her, had a criminal record. Her life was forever changed.
