In the year of our Lord, 1823, Williamsburg, Virginia, Sophia Thorn lives on a tobacco plantation, but life is far from peaceful. Her father is a tyrant and she longs to escape to a new life, away from his control. Her twin brother, Isaac, unbeknown to her father, earns his money from piracy and between them they are trying to save enough money so that she can escape. But it isn't easy. With her brother away at sea and no funds of her own, she formulates a daring plan. If she can stow away on a ship, she can somehow meet up with her brother and join him on his own ship.

As it turns out, the ship she chooses is captained by none other than Jack Steel, a man she met briefly and is instantly attracted to.
